  • POSITION SUMMARY: The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS)/Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) performs a range of tasks through individual and group encounters to assist consumers of behavioral health services in regaining control over their own lives and over their own recovery process. The CPS/CRS will role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills, serve as a consumer advocate, provide information, and peer support in their communities. The CPS/CRS also provides essential expertise and consultation to other team members in promoting a recovery-oriented culture and practice of service provision and in understanding the consumers’ perspective and subjective experience. .

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Be self-identified individuals who have received or are receiving mental health services for a serious emotional disturbance or serious illness, or substance use disorder.

    • Eighteen (18) years of age and older.

    • Have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.

    • Within the last three (3) years, have

    • either maintained at least 12 months of successful work or volunteer experience, or earned at least 24 credit hours at a college or post-secondary educational institution; and

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Carries out the daily routine of individualized and group engagement activities with consumers utilizing rehabilitation and Recovery concepts that include sharing personal recovery experiences, developing a peer relationship that encourages hope in the future, and maximum participation in the community with focus on community integration (e.g., work, school, relationships, physical activities, self-directed hobbies, and interests, etc.).

    • Develop an individualized service plan based on client’s needs, goals, strengths, and barriers.

    • Assist the individual in identifying and valuing their unique strengths, abilities, and assets, and how to best utilize them to achieve their goals.

    • Work with individual and support team around Recovery goal development and planning, including a) assisting individual to define personal interests and goals in relation to Recovery and to getting the life they want in the community; b) provides education on WRAP to assist Recovering individuals in developing their own plans for advancing their recovery.

    • Provides daily information and feedback regarding consumer’s behavior, attitude, and physical condition, as a part of participation in the treatment planning process and in Team meetings,

    • Serves as a role model and promotes self-advocacy so that Recovering individuals will have a voice that is fully heard in ensuring that their needs, goals, and objectives are central in their dealings with provider agencies.

    • Participates in the identification of community resources that support an individual’s goals and interests,

    • Liaisons with community groups/agencies that promote Recovery, along with other team staff, to ensure consumer access to and participation by: a) discussing possible matches and opportunities that coincide with the person’s interests, b) linking to self-help and mutual support groups, c) accompanying individuals to various community providers to familiarize them with potential resources, d) teaching them the skills needed to effectively and successfully utilize resources, and e) coaching to enable independent use of resources.

    • Accompanies individuals to appointments (medical, dental, financial, entitlements, court, and probation, etc.) to provide support and assistance, if requested.

    • Attends in-service, supervision, and other training(s) to meet mandated training hours.

    • Reads/completes required paperwork documentation in timely manner.

    • Adheres to a flex schedule which allows for evening and weekend hours as may be required to respond to individual needs.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Demonstrate good communication, organizational, leadership and time management skills

    • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision

    • Demonstrate good computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office

    • CPS/CRS Shall complete a minimum of 18 hours of continuing education training per calendar year beginning with the first calendar after the year in which the CPS/CRS obtains certification. The 18 hours of training shall include 12 training hours that are specifically focused on peer support or recovery practices, or both.

    1. Possess a valid PA driver's license

    2. Must possess a valid CPS/CRS Certification within 6 months of hire.

    3. Must be able to pass a background check (if working with minors) and drug screen.

  • Unpaid internship opportunities available to gain valuable work experience, obtain specialized skills and learn more about a specific industry.

    The intern will work under the supervision of a Master level social worker and a Certified Peer Specialist Supervisor to provide direct services to individuals, families, and groups in a variety of settings.

    The intern will assist in the development and implementation of individualized service plans, conduct assessments, provide case management and support services, and maintain accurate and timely documentation.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    *Assist in the development and implementation of care plans for participants

    *Conduct assessments to determine participants’ needs and eligibility for services

    *Provide case management and support services to participants and their families.

    *Maintain accurate and timely documentation of participant interactions and progress.

    *Participate in team meetings and case care coordination Teamings to discuss participants’ progress and coordinate care.

    *Attend trainings and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.

    *Adhere to ethical and professional standards in all interactions with clients and colleagues.

    *Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Students participate in experiential and integrative learning opportunities in affiliated community organizations. This experience additionally prepares students for the professional positions they will assume in the marketplace after graduation.
